Fashion Scholarship Fund, now in its 83rd year, delivers one million dollars in scholarship funding annually, and while the gala this year celebrated Rent The Runway and Centric Brands among others, as always it shone the spotlight on students from some of the nation’s top fashion programs.
=Four years ago, Tyshaia Earnest was in her senior year of high school taking aptitude tests to see what career would be best for her. She got many ideas, such as art and marketing or international business. But she didn’t find the perfect fit until she watched “Legally Blonde” and main character, Elle Woods, mentioned her major: fashion merchandising.
The Fashion Scholarship Fund’s (FSF) 83rd annual gala was held Jan. 7 at the New York Hilton in Manhattan and revealed the next generation of young talent in the fashion industry. Tyshaia Earnest, a senior at Kent State University’s School of Fashion Design and Merchandising, emerged as the standout of the evening and was awarded the first-place prize of a $35,000 scholarship.
The Campus Pointe clubhouse was alive with the crinkle of menstrual pads and the sound of Beyoncé’s “Run the World” as attendees assembled more than 100 menstrual care packages for the less fortunate Tuesday night. Orchestrated by Tyshaia Earnest, senior fashion merchandising major and winner of the 2020 Fashion Scholarship Fund, the event brought together community members to assemble packs to be delivered to Haven of Rest Ministries which will distribute them to individuals.
